In short, the VA failed to properly respond to a blood value, and timely intervention would almost certainly have resulted in Calvin keeping his new kidney. Instead of appropriately reviewing and responding to the lab values, VA medical providers did nothing and Calvin’s body rejected the kidney. As a result, he has gone into kidney failure. The complications from his current health condition make him a low priority on the national organ transfer list – as opposed to individuals more likely to benefit from a kidney transfer who get high priority, like Calvin was at the time of his first transplant.
